Circle your kitchen when you clean.....

14/10/2013

Everyone has their own routine for cleaning their kitchen but we've found that circling your way around is actually a really good idea. By that we mean always beginning your cleaning on the right side of your stove, then move clockwise around the room. The stove is typically the dirtiest part of the kitchen so ending with it keeps you from spreading dirt and grease across your kitchen. Soak any washing up first (those pans from last night's dinner will be A LOT easier to clean if they've had a soak in some hot water and fairy!) and by the time you get back to them they'll only need a rinse and a quick scrub!

We all know that sponges can be a breeding ground for bacteria but we've got a quick and easy way to keep your sponge healthy and clean to use. A quick tip is to disinfect yours every few days by squeezing it out and microwaving it on high for a minute. This will kill any nasty bacteria currently residing in it. Eventually when it’s shredded and smelly, replace it.

Do Dishwasher Duty

Once a week, shake baking soda on a damp sponge and wipe around the machine’s edges to remove stuck-on food or stains. To clean the inside, run an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner: make sure you choose a product designed to kill bacteria like E.coli. During cold and flu season, add a quarter-cup of bleach to the regular dish cycle to kill bacteria. The dishes will be safe and sanitised after the rinse cycle is finished.

The quickest way to clean a microwave oven is to place a handful of wet paper towels inside and run it on high for 3-5 minutes. You don't need a science lesson to know that the steam from the towels will soften the grime. Once the paper towels cool down, use them to wipe the oven's interior.

A simple tip that we wish we'd known a long time ago!

Get a Loo as Good as New!

Is your toilet full of limescale and other stains and you don't have a chemical toilet cleaner on hand? Or are you looking for less expensive and/or non-toxic cleaning solutions? Don't worry, just reach for the fridge, and grab a Coke!

Step 1: Pour cola into the bowl. Pour it around the rim so it flows over the stains around the inside of the bowl.

Step 2: Let it sit for at least an hour. The acids in the cola will break down the stains. For extra cleaning power, let the cola sit in the toilet overnight.

Step 3: Optionally, clean the toilet with a brush. If there are lots of stubborn stains, you may need to use a brush to further loosen them before going to the next step.

Step 4: Flush. At least some of the limescale buildup should be dissolved by the phosphoric acid in the cola.

Who knew that cheap cola makes a very efficient toilet cleaner?

Make Glass Doors Shine!

15/3/2013

Placed in a moist, warm location, shower doors are prone to mildew and mould growth. Add to that the soap scum that quickly builds up over time, and you've got quite the cleaning task in front of you. Here’s how to take the pain out of this cleaning chore and have your doors sparkling!

You Will Need:
  • White vinegar
  • Sponges or soft cloths
  • Water
  • Lemon oil
  • Bucket
Steps to Clean Shower Doors:
  1. Start by mixing one part water with one part vinegar in a bucket. If there is a lot of build up on the doors, use more vinegar. Straight vinegar can be used as well for really dirty doors.
  2. Moisten the sponge or soft cloth in the mixture.
  3. Rub it over the surfaces of the door to remove any soap scum and hard water stains that have built up. Apply more of the vinegar/water mixture as you are scrubbing to keep the surface wet.
  4. Once clean, rinse with clean water.
  5. Dry with a soft cloth to remove any excess water and make the doors shine.
  6. If there are still water spots present, there are two options:
  • If there is still hard water deposits or soap scum present, wipe the surface with white vinegar on a soft cloth or sponge.
  • If the door is clean, and all surface residue has been removed, you can apply lemon oil to the surface using a soft cloth or sponge. This will make the glass shine. It also works well on the metal frames.

Additional Tips and Advice
  • Dry the doors off after each use to keep soap scum and hard water stains from returning.
  • Treat any signs of mould or mildew immediately with a mild bleach or vinegar solution.
  • Use caution when selecting commercial cleaning products. Some cleaners that are designed to clean tile and tubs are not safe to use on glass. Rather than cleaning them, they can etch the surface and leave a dull, filmy appearance.
  • Want to treat the source of soap scum? Switch to liquid soap. The bar soap is what causes soap scum in the first place.
